LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GREG VANNEY
On his thoughts following the draw against Seattle:

“Big picture, I was pleased with how the team played. We were hard to break down, especially in the first half. I think they were confused as to how to break us down and I thought we had some decent run at them. We got the goal and we could have maybe got a second goal in that stretch when they were there. Then they started to loosen up a little bit with some of their movement and obviously they got a little bit more of the possession, and at times pinned us in a little bit deeper. But I thought for good stretches, aside from some set-pieces, by and large we were fairly in control of things and fairly comfortable. We had to do a little bit of work, but fairly comfortable. I thought we had a little bit of a hard time sometimes getting out of our defensive shape in the transition to be able to then go from our defensive shape into a good attacking shape where we could keep possession of the ball. I thought we would have a little bit more of the ball over the course of the night than we did. Some of that was I thought we hesitated too long just to get the ball off of our foot. We were looking for a better pass when the clear pass was in front of us. Against a team like Seattle, you’ve got to move the ball quickly and when you do that you can get them discombobulated in some of their pressure and you get some possession and you can get some movement. But I thought we were just hesitating on the ball a little bit too long at times, which got us pinned into areas of the field that meant we turned over balls that we would have liked to have not turnover which meant more defending. But I thought we had some good chances down the stretch. On the goal, it’s something that we talked about all week going into this was [Cristian] Roldan’s run outs from midfield and just his willingness to keep running and to make sure that we always had someone to deal with that. Ideally, that was kind of why Fish [Oniel Fisher] was in. He was sitting in a little bit deeper and hoping to manage the run outs and to help us defend a little bit more. Unfortunately, he got on the wrong side of that and made kind of a hasty play at the end that ends up being a penalty. Aside from that, they had a couple of free kick, set-piece chances that were obviously close. It was an incredible save from Bondy [Jonathan Bond] from point blank on the header. We had a couple of decent looks, especially on the transition where we just don’t get the final pass that we need. We don’t get the play that we need to try to make a difference. We had one right in front of the goal of our own set piece again. There were chances for us to win it. It’s hard to say we should have won it, but we certainly could have won it and that’s what we were trying to do. We were trying to protect ourselves, but at the same time set ourselves up to take the three points if we could. But the one point could prove valuable, but we don’t know yet. We’ll see. We know what we have to do when we come home. We’re in front of our fans in we’re in our stadium and the picture is clear as to what we need to do.”

On what it meant to have Chicharito back after missing the last match:
“He’s a guy that can independently think on the field and read situations and recognize what’s dangerous in games when you need that. When things are adapting, and the other team is moving players into different areas of the field, he was super committed to not allowing midfielders to get on the ball and face forward between lines and the work that he was doing on the defensive side to condense space and crowd them up was enormous for us. His ability to hold up play sometimes when we needed to get out in transition because we were sitting in a lower block was huge for us. He’s savvy, he’s smart, he can adapt in the game and it’s important that you can do that. We missed that last week because it becomes very rigid sometimes with our younger players who are still learning things tactically. You almost need somebody around them telling them where they should be and that doesn’t happen fast enough. When he can do it on his own and people can read off of him, it just helps us such a great deal. I know he would have liked a chance to really finish it off to get the second one, but he did an incredible amount of work.”

On Jonathan Bond’s save in stoppage time and the vibe of the team heading into Sunday’s regular-season finale against Minnesota:
“When I saw him up rising and it came off his head, I was concerned. Yes. It all happened so fast that I’m not even sure if my heart had time to even stop, but yes; I was certainly concerned. When we came back home after two good results and that third game against Dallas… I thought if we could win it, we really would put ourselves in a good position to get in with just something down the stretch. When we didn’t win that game, then I felt the two games away in Kansas City and then Seattle were going to be really tough games and it was going to come down to the game at home because we were going to battle it out with Minnesota for one of the spots. I felt like the way it was going, it was there. There were some games along the stretch at home for sure that we needed to take some of the points that were there for us at home and would have probably made us a little more comfortable  down it. This whole stretch has been really good for this team. I know it’s not been comfortable, but in terms of trying to grow as a group we have to play in some of these pressure games and now we’ve got to play in a really big game, which is essentially a playoff game. It’s a knockout game. That’s what it is. It’s the old fashioned knockout.. One and move on, or one and done. This is going to be a great experience for this group of players together to go home and try to get this done.”

LA GALAXY GOALKEEPER JONATHAN BOND
On whether or not he thinks this is a match the club should have won against Seattle:
“We definitely had the chances to win it. We had a lot of chances. I mean Seba’s [Sebastian Lletget] chance before halftime and then straight after halftime we had a chance from a corner and then even actually my save we’re just one good pass away from winning 2-1. But at the same time, in the balance of the game I thought they dominated the second half to be honest and we just had to be resolute, stand strong and hold them to a point.”

On what he saw on his save in stoppage time:
“It was a good ball, it was flat and the guy just met it perfectly. It was straight on his head. It was an instinctive reaction and then I was just relieved it hit the bar and went to Nick [DePuy], who cleared it. And then I thought we were going to score. I thought we were going to score on the counter attack and that we would really be flying then. Obviously it was an important moment and an important point.”

On the team’s regular-season finale against Minnesota on Sunday:
I do think we made progress, especially since the last game we were here. They were way better than us and they beat us 3-0, and today we could have two or three up before they got a hold of the game. So from that point of view, it was definitely an improvement. I still think we have a lot of improving to do. We have a lot of young players, a lot of new players and we’re trying to build something that’s not just for here and now. We’re not in a bad place. I think the point today was actually a big point. A lot of teams would probably look at us and see that we lost to Kansas [City] and we’ve got to go away at Seattle, who are chasing first place and they’ve got [Nicolas] Lodeiro back, [Jordan] Morris is back, Ruidíaz is playing and everyone is fit and playing and we’ve gone and stepped up and earned an important point.”

LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GREG VANNEY
On his thoughts after the loss to Sporting KC:

“As I said to the guys, from the start, we weren’t set up great. And then we felt like the whole game that we were trying to organize ourselves in a way that we could settle in and get more comfortable, get more of the ball, still be dangerous and defend in a way that we were comfortable. I felt like, for me, I was chasing the game the whole time to try to get us into some way that we could feel comfortable and still be dangerous in the game.  As I said to them, I appreciate their effort. I thought they worked hard the entire game and they fought for everything in the game. They tried to battle through the game, but we just never really found our comfort zone within the game. And so I put that on me in terms of our organization and just trying to get us into the right spots. I felt like we were too narrow at the start just with Seba [Sebastian Lletget] inside, and so we didn't create any spaces for us to be able to play forward early in the game. So then we got Kévin [Cabral] on and tried to just get more width ahead of the ball and try to open up some space. As we did that, we had some moments, but we also weren't as solid defensively and we also weren't necessarily as dangerous and weren't able to really get dangerous in front of their goal or around their goal. So as we started to go, we started to try to find different ways that we could support our forward and to get more something in front of the goal; more presence in front of the goal, more balls in front of the goal, something that can threaten their goal. In the process of doing that, and trying to get some numbers in the right place, we obviously exposed ourselves a little bit. They had two shots on goal in the grand scheme of things, but having said that; we just never really found a comfortable position in the game to be able to get some control of the game. That's why I say the guys battled and we dealt with a lot of stuff, but we just never really found our comfort and our flow in the game of how we were going to control the game and how we were going to create a chance. But the guys competed for 90 minutes, we put this one behind us and now we’ve got to concentrate and prepare hopefully for the next one with an extra day to get on the field and try to work on preparation for Seattle. They’re also a good team. We have to give them credit. They're also a good team who very much understands their structure and they've got guys who filled their roles very well and their structure played a good part in the game for them being able to control things.”

On what Sporting KC did to control the midfield battle:
“They pressed us with kind of a narrow front three and their two attacking midfielders really tried to get up and get in on our midfield. So it was hard for our midfielders to find space, hard for Jona [Jonathan dos Santos] and Rayan [Raveloson] to find any space and to try to find the ball. Victor [Vázquez] … it was also tough for him to find the ball. Their midfielders really just sought out our midfielders, and then we needed to do a good job with our center backs to try to really eliminate the striker to be able to force somebody out to defend us. They were releasing from their weak-side winger strong to our center back and we just weren't quick enough to find the solution. Sometimes I felt like we were narrowing up our space too much ahead of the ball, and so we weren't able to play through the lines, which means you stay in front of that pressure. And when you stay in front of the pressure, you become very vulnerable for losing balls in between the lines. That's what was happening for a good chunk of  the first half, and I thought it got a little bit better as the game progressed, but still not enough where we got really comfortable in the game and started to flow and get some rhythm in what we were trying to do.”

On why Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez wasn’t available for the match against Sporting KC:
“The night before travel, he reached out to the doctors. He was not feeling well. They followed up with him. It wasn’t anything to do with COVID, but he had a high fever and some other issues physically. Just throat soreness, achiness and things like that that it’s a risk to put him in an airplane with the rest of the group. And so it's better to let him get some rest, hopefully fully recover and give us everything he has for the last two matches.”

LA GALAXY DEFENDER JULIAN ARAUJO
On what he saw in the match against Sporting KC:
“We had a different plan this game. It didn't work out the way we wanted to go, but this game is over with now. We can't really stress over it any more. We know we have two games… We have two finals to focus on. We have Seattle next on Monday and we’ve just got to [get up for it] now. We’ve just got to turn it around, we’ve got to recover and we’ve got to focus on what we need to focus on and learn from the mistakes we made today. We're going to have our full squad next week, so we're going to be ready for Seattle and hopefully turn it around.”

On whether or not the team is aware of the playoff line:

“We're not really keeping our focus on the line. We know that we want to get to the playoffs. We know what it's going to take. We know that we’ve got to win these games coming up and we're not really keeping an eye on the line. We know how many points we need to get and our goal is to get to the playoffs. We're going to do whatever we can to get there.”

On what he thinks Sporting KC did to disrupt the Galaxy’s rhythm:

“I don't really think it was Kansas that made us feel uncomfortable. I think it was just ourselves. I think we lost some sloppy balls all around. We lost a lot of balls in the midfield for them to transition on us. They had two shots on goal and they scored both of their chances and this is how the game ended up. I know we had a couple of chances, but ultimately I think it's on us and we need to turn it around and we need to learn from today and focus on Monday.”

LA GALAXY MIDFIELDER SEBASTIAN LLETGET
On the team's performance:

“It was just a lack of intensity, there really is no excuse at this point because we are playing for so much. And I know it is the third game of the week and it is never easy, but I think we just lacked that intensity. We take pride in how we play and how we want to play but you can't come out there without having that fight in you first. We have to earn it, we have to earn the right to play sometimes, and I think we lacked that in the first half a little bit. When you are down 2-0 the message is pretty clear, we have to play forward, we just have to be more intense, and I thought the whole team did bring that in the second half.”

On Greg Vanney asking him to play higher up the field:

“We have been having these ongoing conversations and I have tried to take it upon myself because of the disruption and rhythm and not having the consistent amount of games due to scheduling and things like that. I've just tried to really learn my place in this team position wise and obviously we try so many different things and some things work, and some things don't. Sometimes we have an opposition that plays a certain way, and we adapt. It was a good conversation we had before this game that I just have to keep thinking forward because I know I can do it, it is just one of those things. I just have to keep building on that. We walk away with 7 points this week and we have two tough games now; it's not going to be easy, but we can salvage something.”

On playing Seattle and Kansas City on the road:

"They are historically very tough places to play. It's not even really about the surface or about the crowd, they are two really good teams, there is a reason why they are at the top. I think we are more than good enough to beat them; we just have to work on our game plan, we have to see what we can do better from this game. I don't think it is about ability at this point, we are at the point in the season where it is who wants it more. We are in a playoff spot, but we want to secure it."

On the goal:

"Samuel [Grandsir] was having a lot of joy and he is just so good one versus one, so I just thought, instead of staying out wide I just have to get in the box, and I think when me and Chicha [Javier Chicharito Hernandez] do that, or when we have numbers in the box, he either drags out a center back and opens up space for me or I do the same for him or whoever is in there. I think it is something we need to keep building on and things open up."

LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GREG VANNEY
On the difference between the team’s performance in the first half and the second half:

“Conviction. We competed in the second half, we didn't compete in the first half, we were second to everything. We were slow to closing people down. The ball was moving too slow. The first half lacked anything that looked like a team that was supposed to be fighting for a Playoff spot and a real opportunity tonight to jump a couple of more points ahead. So that’s what the first half looked like. The second half looked completely the opposite. Looked like a team that was playing for everything and was fighting for every ball, was competing in their challenges, was looking to play forward and run forward and put balls in front of the goal. And I mean, that's the difference. At the end of the day, tactics are irrelevant. You have to win the duels, you have to win the fight, you have to win all the scrappy stuff in there and then you can start to play soccer. And we lost all the scrappy stuff in the first half and we didn't get close to them at all defensively. And so, they dictated the game and got two goals ahead, deservingly. And the response was fantastic. And that's what it needs to look like, though. But it can't look like what it looked like in the first half this time of year. It has to look like what it looked like in the second half.”

On what the message was at halftime:

“Yeah, I didn't spend a lot of time at halftime talking about the first half because I just said flat out the energy and the conviction and the fight in the competitive side of it can't look like that. So, we got on to setting ourselves up in the second half, making a couple of switches. You know, Jonathan [dos Santos] and Victor [Vazquez] were both struggling physically. So, we made a couple of switches and tried to shift the energy and tried to shift the momentum and asked them to play forward, put two forwards up. Pushed a little bit more numbers high. Said, don't want to play in the back anymore, just put the ball forward and let's go, defend, and compete and press and let's try to change our energy level in the game. It wasn't about keeping possession, it was about us shifting the energy in the game, because we had none in the first half, really. And so, once the energy shifted, then we were able to start playing and we were able to start creating some chances because then we were actually moving at a real speed. And so, once that started to happen, then we started to gain control of the game. As we all know, when you start chasing games at 2-0, then it's really about putting out fires sometimes and having to deal with some things. And the guys in the back did a good job of managing some difficult transitions and some moments that looked like they were going to get a little fuzzy. And we dealt with them and kept the momentum on to get the goals we needed to at least get the draw out of it.”

On the red card call that changed to a yellow card:

“I didn't. It was because there was a tackle and within the tackle, I was still trying to pay attention to what was going on with that. So, I didn't see what was going on the other side of it, which is what they were actually trying to sort out the whole time. And then I was more concerned about how much time was going to be added at the end of the game, than I was about how that was going to play itself out.”

On the team’s vertically and directness in the second half and if it’s something that needs to be more integrated into the team’s plan:

“Yeah, I think we'll talk about this probably after most games, it's going to be the difference between us being goal dangerous and not being goal dangerous. It’s how vertical we run, how vertical we pass, how much we're willing to threaten the space behind the opposition. You know how much we're willing to play between lines and build speed and momentum and all these kinds of things. And so, you know, in the second half, obviously, it was at times with a little bit of reckless abandon at times because you're pushing for two goals. But the idea of play forward, move forward, you know, after you play a pass, try to get in behind the back line. The basic principles of attacking to break lines and to get into goalscoring positions started to come out. But it's just again, it comes with conviction and commitment to making those runs. Sometimes you get the ball, sometimes you don't, but you still got to make the run and we started to get that as the game progressed.”

On Sebastian Lletget’s goal and what he asked him to do in the second half:

“Yeah, we've been talking to Sebastian [Lletget] for the better part of the last week about taking up higher positions, being more goal dangerous, being more assists dangerous. His

tendency as a player, and he is outstanding at keeping possession, spinning away, doing all of those things. But you know, as I spoke to him for a while yesterday, I want him to not play to his default, which is to keep possession. I want him to play, to attack and to create chances and to score goals. And if those things aren't on, then go to your default next. Don't just go to your default at the at the beginning and him breaking the line and running through and taking a chance there meant the difference in the game, really. And that was an aggressive run that I don't know, you know, you can ask him, but maybe, maybe a week and a half ago or two weeks ago, he doesn't make, he sits out a little bit and tries to find the ball at his feet. But in this game, he's really tried this last week and I thought he was very good in the last match as well. But this week, he's really tried to emphasize more attacking runs, getting himself higher on the field, all those kinds of things, which I think is what's going to make him more influential in matches.”
